Claire Lay sent Baileys' Nutritionist, Emma Case, this email in May 2008. She rang Emma in September 2006, when she took on Gadget, then only 9 weeks old, after his mother died in an accident in the field. Emma recommended Baileys Foal Creep Pellets, as these milk based pellets would be easy for him to digest and provide all the important nutrients he needed at this early stage in his life.
Hi Emma
I would just like to thank you & Baileys Horse Feeds for all your help and advice in feeding Gadget, my orphaned foal. He is now rising two and is winning every young stock class he has been entered in! He has several county shows lined up this summer and we can’t wait to see how he get on. I am so happy with how he has grown and developed on Baileys and will continue to use your feeds as they have done him so well. Should the next few months be as successful as the winter league showing, I hope to qualify Gadget for the Horse of the Year Show!
Thank you again for all your help and advice
Best Regards
Claire Lay
Letter received April 2008 from Angela Gladding, Wiltshire, regarding the improvements to her horse after following some feeding recommendations...
I am writing to say thank you for all the great feeding advice I have been given recently! I was finding it hard to get the right amount of energy into my horse without sending him over the edge as he can be quite highly strung. He is now being fed 8lbs (in 2 feeds) of No.9 All-Round Competition Mix a day, alongside 2 coffee mugs (1lb) of Stud Balancer. Since changing his feed to this he is so much more manageable and trainable. (Editor’s Note: Stud Balancer will top up nutrient levels in the diet if the recommended quantities are not being fed for whatever reason!)
'I have attached a photo of my novice horse Viletto. We have just returned from the Easter Show at Rowallan in Scotland. I had a super show with double clears in every class and some placings. He is naturally a good-doer and has a very calm and kind temperament. This mix doesn’t fizz him up and certainly helps him maintain his energy. He normally flags after the first class, but I feel that the All-Round Endurance Mix prolongs his energy levels – so a big thank you for inventing such a fantastic feed. Everybody commented on what a beautiful horse he is and what good condition he is in. They said I must be feeding him gold to look like he does! I said, "No, it’s called Baileys All-Round Endurance Mix!"
Email from Claire Fowler, received March 2008 regarding her ID x TB 'Jay'.
E-mail received from Alison Earp from Devon in January 2008 regarding her horse Razzle
I wanted to write and thank you - in particular the person I spoke to Emma (one of Baileys’ Nutritionists), for the advice she gave me on feeding my 27 year ‘young’ gelding, Razzle. I rang in September for some advice because I was concerned about the lack of weight he was holding on to - especially with the winter looming. The advice to up his roughage intake by introducing grass nuts to maintain his current concentrate but to add in Baileys Outshine has done wonders.
I absolutely adore Baileys feeds. Their quality is second to none – you’d nearly eat the mixes yourself - and there is no comparison to what’s on the market here in Southern Ireland. During the showing season I fed No.17 Top Line Conditioning Mix to my 6 year old Connemara Stallion, Gleann Rua Native (or Reuben for short) who won the ridden stallion class at the famous Clifden Connemara Pony Show and then went on to stand as Reserve Ridden Champion. Reuben is incredibly athletic and active and therefore he is not what you would call a ‘good doer’ (which is why he’s on No.17) - it just gives him that extra - without the edge. Now that the showing season has finished he is being feed Stud Balancer and the Economy Mix Plus. He is fussy and I have had huge problems with him in the past when I used other brands. However now he awaits eagerly for his feeds and always leaves the feed trough sparkling !!!
My other gelding is 15 years, Blue (Glensheen Finn) - see photo left - and is what you would call an EXTREMELY good doer. He would get fat just dreaming about grass . He is fed on Lo-cal and always looks absolutely fantastic. It keeps his coat and his feet in super condition.Received in September 2007 from Rose Ball in Bristol regarding her 19 year old, 14.3hh horse Llangattock Ryefield Express (or Callan for short).
Just to say that I started feeding Lo-Cal to my Welsh cob in November and the improvement in hoof growth is amazing. The time before last when he was shod there were bits of hoof going everywhere but this time there was hoof to cut off and it didn't flake into pieces.
This has particular significance as I'm married to the farrier and he was much happier!
E-mail from Claire Moore
Received in August 2007 regarding some helpful advice she had received. Her pony, La Bamba, pictured, is now on Baileys No.8 Meadow Sweet with honey.
I would like to express my thanks to your Equine Nutritionist, Elizabeth Bush. In January 2006 my beloved pony was unfortunately returned to me from loan in a poor and upsetting condition. I was in need of urgent expert advice and I contacted another well known feed company who failed to reply (still nothing!). I emailed Baileys and recieved an impressive, prompt and very helpful reply from Elizabeth. She understood my concern for a pony both my sister and I have grown up on and successfully competed, before moving onto competition horses and he was then loaned to children to enjoy. Elizabeth remained at my needs for a period of time, helping me get through the stages of my pony returning to a good condition.
Approximately 2/3 months later he was back to his healthy sparkling self with a lovely glossy coat! He has spent the last year with another young girl (at home!) who is now ready to do more; RC teams, etc so I contacted Elizabeth once again for advice to revise the feeding plan now that he is going on to do more work again and I got yet another very prompt and informative reply. I have owned my pony since he was a 5yo and he is now a 21yo, which is impossible to believe as he looks fantastic!
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you and praise you for a fantastic customer service. I now feed only Baileys and I wouldn't look back.
Baileys, you're the best!!
Kind Regards, Claire Moore.
Received from Joanne Smales from East Yorkshire iin July 2007,regarding her 7 year old TB ‘Bailey’ (a fantastic name!!), who was struggling to regain weight after an illness.
I wanted to e-mail to tell you how pleased I am with the results from feeding your feed to my horse Bailey. Bailey is a 7 year old Thoroughbred and is a very sensitive but loving character. Ever since Christmas Bailey struggled to keep weight on, his hair didn't grow back after being clipped and generally he didn't seem very happy. I had tried different feeds and the vet had investigated everything we could think of!
In April I brought Bailey in one day and he was very ill. After spending a week at the vets he was finally diagnosed with a stomach ulcer. The vet recommended a nutritionist (our North East representative Jen Baxter) from Baileys Horse Feeds to help me decide what to feed him. With some medication and specialist feeding Bailey has successfully recovered.
He is now on Baileys Stud Balancer and Outshine and is doing better than ever!! He is going from strength to strength and I am so pleased! We have recently competed successfully at some unaffiliated dressage and his jumping is progressing well!
The picture (left) show Bailey just before he was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer in April 07 (top) and then three months later in July (bottom).
I want to say a big thankyou for the help I received from Baileys Horse Feeds and I will continue to use your products.
I just wanted to contact you to say that I am absolutely delighted with a particular feed in your range. I get your newsletter several times a year (Winning Ways) and find it very informative and interesting. I decided to follow some advice from the newsletter and from an ad in Your Horse magazine regarding Lo cal balancer.
My pony is an extremely good doer who lives in a starvation paddock but is fussy with hay and most food stuffs. He won't eat Blue Chip or the Dodson and Horrell equivalent so I was nervous about buying your balancer in case he didn't like it. However, he (Murphy) adores it! Even on starvation rations, if he does not like something he just won't eat it and every feed I have ever given him has only ever been half eaten, whether he has worked or if it was a balancer. With Lo-Cal he licks his bucket so clean it is amazing. Most feeds also seem to hot him up and make him a bit too lively, but with this one he is absolutely fine and his behaviour has actually improved and he is not bad tempered like he normally is on his yearly diet.
I just want to say a huge thank you to Baileys for designing such a useful feed for fat ponies everywhere!
E-mail from Lynnette Homersham
Received from Lynette Homersham in May 2007,regarding the improvement to her horse Bug, whose condition improved dramatically on Baileys Endurance Mix and Outshine.
Received from Karen Woodage in April 2007, regarding the improvement to her horse Apollo, who has flourished on Baileys No.4 Top Line Conditioning Cubes.
I have always struggled to keep weight on Apollo ever since I have had him. I rescued him from a horse market. If I hadn't taken him home he would of gone for meat (he was 6 years old at the time) and I will have had him 5 years this July. The first photo shows him ‘before’ I was feeding Baileys No.4 Top Line Conditioning Cubes (about 7 weeks ago) and the second is him ‘after’ being on the cubes, taken on 15th April 07 – he looks so much better!
I have tried all the other makes of feed from the £10 sack of feed to the £35 sack of feed. Not one of them has made Apollo look so good as Baileys has done. He’s also a lot calmer which is great as he now is so much easier to ride, even my 13 an 14 year old daughters like to ride him. I have now started to feed all my other horses Baileys and I will be recommending it to all of my friends.
So thank you all at Baileys for making a feed that actually does what it says on the bag. I will never need another make of feed. Thanks again.
Joanna emailed in January to tell us about her success in the dressage arena......
Joanna Brooke, from Selby in Yorkshire, bought her Hannovarian x Friesian gelding, Imperial Crusader, as a two year old after she went to look at other youngsters and he got into the schooling area with them. "He wasn’t for sale but he moved with such elegance and I knew I had to have him," Joanna told us. "Luckily I managed to persuade the owners to let me buy him!" Imperial Crusader (or Morac to his friends) started out in the show ring as a four year old but he was 'too light' for a hunter and 'too big' for a riding horse so Joanna decided to try a few unaffiliated dressage competitons and, being successsfull affiliated him with British Dressage (BD) at the end of 2004. Since then they have been working their way up through the levels and last year Joanna and Morac competed 16 times with fantastic results; 11 wins and 4 seconds, at Novice and Elementary, and a very respectable 5th place at the Winter Championships, in the Restricted Novice Championship! They have recently qualified at Elementary for the 2007 Winter Championships, held at Solihull on 11 -15 April, currently have over 130 BD points and are working towards Medium level. "I am really looking forward to going to the “Winters” again," comments Joanna, "and would love a good result as it makes all the 5.30am starts worth it! Morac is very laid back so I feed him Baileys No. 9 All-Round Competition Mix as it gives him the sparkle he needs without fizzing him up and has vitamins and mineral levels to support the hard work of training and competing. As you can see he also looks great on it!’ Baileys are sponsoring the Novice Freestyle Championships, held at the Winter Championships, for the fourth year and we will keep our eye out to see how Joanna gets on and let you know! Received from Felicity Elder in January 2007, regarding her horse Fishy who has flourished on Baileys No.17 Top Line Conditioning Mix.
I wish to thank you for the advice you gave me just over a year ago now on feeding my under weight 16.3 TB gelding. He is doing brilliantly on the diet you recommended and is looking superb. I had tried everything but he was looking really bad and him being a wind sucker didn't help matters as often the post seemed more inviting than his dinner! But your Top Line Conditioning Mix along with alfa and sugarbeet has got him really enjoying his food and licking the bucket clean. Again I wish to say thank you - my Fishy is now a changed horse.Received from Dawn Jennings, based in Nottinghamshire, in December 2006, regarding her horse Mo who is convinced Baileys Top Line Conditioning Mix is quite simply the best!
I just want to say how pleased I am with your No.17 Top Line Conditioning Mix. I recently moved my 17.2 CB X TB from a Saracen’s mix to this one. To be honest the change in his topline is absolutely amazing!! I struggled to keep weight on him and getting his topline seemed unacheivable... but now I take it all back – it’s fantastic!! I feed him a mixture of No.17, Hi-fi Original, Speedybeet with soya and cod liver oil and carrots. Oh and not forgetting the Garlic which he loves!!! Thank you Baileys for showing me there is good reason to try the best because it quite simply is!!!!!!! Received from Dorset based Chloe in November 2006, regarding her horse Fenn whose appearance improved dramatically after being fed Outshine (high oil supplement).
I bought Fenn in August 2005 from a showing/point to point yard in Cambridge as a raw from the field, totally untouched, 4 year old. His brother, Rosenbright, won the RIHS Hunter Champion of the year in 2002 and we hope to have the same success but as a Working Hunter. Baileys sponsored top show producer Lynn Russell said that she would have bought him for herself if she had seen him first and that he will go all the way to the top!
The first photo was taken 2 months after my purchase and the next one was taken 2 months after being on Outshine, at his first ever show where he won both his classes. Fenn looks and is going fantastically. He has improved dramatically due to Outshine and is in preparation now for Search for a Star next season, and with the aid of Outshine I predict he will do very well. Received October 2006, after she won a prize for completing the FEI 2* 80km (endurance) ride at Builth Wells on her Arab gelding.
Just a quick email to thank you for the feed voucher. My arab gelding had been fed successfully a balancer and unmolassed sugar beet all year for rides up to 65km (40 miles) but I found that this wasn't enough for him when we completed our first 80km (50 miles) ride. As he had lost quite a bit of weight, I introduced Baileys No.4 Top Line Conditioning Cubes to address this, and two weeks before the Red Dragon, started him on Baileys No.6 All-Round Endurance Mix, cutting out the cubes three days before the ride. He thrived on this diet and his recovery times were fantastic. He is now back on No.4 (Top Line Conditioning Cubes) to get his weight back up for the winter. Once again, thank you. Received September 2006, requesting feed advice for her 15.2hh, 7 year old sorel American Quarter horse, One Hot Yo Yo (or Jack for short).
We recommended using Baileys Lo-Cal balancer, (to provide vitamins, minerals and quality protein) plus Outshine for that little bit of extra stamina and shine.
Several months ago you very kindly advised me on a feeding regime for Jack. Well here he is (that's not me up top, but my friend Ali, who did most of his English training. She works for Bruce Lawrence our western trainer, and it was her first go at showing western. The picture was taken just before the Novice Horse pleasure class at the Western Equestrian Society championships which was our first show. Nothing like going in the deep end!
shiny - lots of people comment on how shiny he looks. His muscle definition is good too. How much is work and how much is feed I don't know but he looks well on it all - lots of people asked what he was getting fed! I'd really like to thank you for offering such a great service where ordinary horse owners like me can get expert advice, it seems such a good idea that is also good marketing - win win all round - you get sales, I get great nutrition advice and my horse gets well fed. Sounds good to me.Received July 2006, requesting feed advice for her horse Rupert.
We recommended using Baileys Lo-Cal balancer, (to provide vitamins, minerals and quality protein) plus Outshine for that little bit of extra shine.
Following your excellent advice for my horse Rupert, I just thought I'd let you know how we've been getting on! I was having problems with my lovely veteran four-legged friend - he'd lost his sparkle, looked generally lacklustre and was having difficulty shedding his winter coat!! Well - I can't thank you enough for your advice and helpful suggestions. There was an immediate improvement - even by the end of the first week. And with each week that's passed, Rupert has just looked better and better - and he's now back to his handsome, shiny old self! I have been giving him 3 mugs of Lo-Cal balancer, plus a mug of Outshine each day, as you recommended - on top of the mollichaff/oats/sugar beet feeds he gets at the livery yard. I'll continue to give him this, to maintain the benefits (he scoffs it all up, so he really enjoys it too!) His coat is so healthy looking now, and he almost looks varnished he's so shiny after being grooming. He's a lovely brown/black colour, so you can imagine how great he looks! And, most importantly, he seems so much better in himself now. He looks much happier and is right back to his curious, 'What's in there? Who's that? Let's have a look!' ways! People have commented on how well he looks - and I tell them the 'secret formula', of course! The lady who runs the yard commented on what a lovely shape he is! That's great considering he's 24 years old! And it's all down to the Baileys. I just wanted to let you know what a difference your advice has made, and to say thanks very much! Received June 2006, requesting feed advice for her horse Peggy.
We recommended using Baileys Lo-Cal balancer (to provide vitamins, minerals and quality protein).
Peggy is a 15.1hh Quarter horse who is rising 7, weighs about 450kgs and is in medium work. She's out during the day and in at night. She has a fabulous temperament and is in good condition. When the grass is good I worry she might tip over into being overweight, so it can be tempting to have her on very minimal hard feed but then I worry she may not be getting the right vits and mins from her feed. Lo-Cal balancer does sound ideal. It was very reassusring to get some advice and know that now she will be getting what she needs without compromising her weight (good doers are fantastic but sometimes difficult!). Thanks ever so much again, I'll let you know how I get on with her new diet! Received May 2006, regarding her Show Jumper and Baileys No.4 Top Line Conditioning Cubes
Hello there, I just thought I'd send a quick email to let you know how pleased I am with Baileys No.4 (Top Line Conditioning Cubes). My Grade B Showjumping horse is looking and feeling fantastic! I have been using Baileys No.4 for the past year and he hasn't performed as well on any other feed product, it really suits him. I have been to and won many Young Rider and Grades B/C Qualifiers all over the Country and have had many comments from complete strangers on how well he looks! Also would you recommend I try my horse on Baileys No.17 (Top Line Conditioning Mix), I have been told it’s similar to No.4 but there’s a bit more energy content? I have got some photos of myself and my horse competing in a 1.40m class at Scope (shown right). Kindest Regards, Laura In regards to Laura’s query about swapping her horse onto Baileys No.17 Top Line Conditioning Mix, we advised her to stick with No.4. Her mare is clearly performing very well on them and consequently, there’s no reason to change. Received May 2006, requesting feed advice for her 16.1hh Irish Draught x Thoroughbred who is going to be
at rest enjoying the grass during the summer to maintain condition.
E-mail received from Mike Small who is based in Wiltshire in February 2008
I bought Murphy back in March 2006. He is a 16.2hh 9yo skewbald gelding, (Clydesdale x Cob x ID) with the best attitude any horse could ever have, he is my best mate.
Murphy arrived in the poorest condition you could imagine, unfit, below weight, no energy, no muscle definition and no enthusiasm and carrying an unbelievable burden of internal parasites. Having dealt with the parasites the worst had yet to come as he was showing difficulty in swallowing his food and breathing. After an endoscopy and a vet’s bill it was found he had a partially paralized larynx and gullet.
Time has moved on and Murphy now has fully recovered from a hobday and tie back operation he underwent a year ago. He is now leading a normal healthy life hacking out, jumping, doing fun rides and hunting.
During the past two years feeding Murphy has been so difficult, trying to cope with operations, recovery and to achieve weight gain, condition and fitness. Throughout all this Baileys have been a huge help with their feeding advice and suggestions, and at present he is on a combination of Baileys No.1 Cooked Cereal Meal, Stud Balancer, Outshine and Alfa A Oil, plus adding Baileys prebiotic Digest Plus when necessary. He looks absolutely fantastic, the best he has ever been. Thank you to Baileys feeds and their support.
I purchased Jay back in November 2007. She is a green but very confident 5yo 15.3hh ID x TB. We’re learning a lot together, and through Parelli our relationship is blossoming - she is most definitely developing in to a very playful, curious and confident girl.
I have long been using Baileys feeds for the others in the yard, and on my 20 year old retired mare with such fab results! So I was naturally confident that this is the way to go for Jay. She is on Stud Balancer to support her final stages of growing years so she gets all the vital nutrients she needs without fattening her up whilst in light to medium work. And she is proving to be a very good-doer too (picture is of her in January!). I also use Outshine for that glossy coat, and as a dressing for that overall sparkly condition complemented with Alfa-A for fibre. To me this is the perfect formula!
This year will be an educational/fun year for Jay and I as we’ll be participating in Parelli work shops and play days. We hope to be out hunting and taking part in various competitions and RC activities where she will be looking just amazing – thanks to Baileys!
Thank you again for all your help and advice.
Best regards
Claire Lay
