Matthew Wright
Matthew Wright first sat on a pony when he was only 18 months old and has never really looked back. Being the son of a dealer he is used to riding anything and everything and would always recommend riding as many different horses as possible as the best way to improve one’s riding!
He considers himself really lucky to be able to do what he loves day in, day out, despite the hard work and weather. His packed day includes mucking out, riding 7-8 horses, office work before getting to bed by 9.30pm every night! “I have a lot of ambitions to fill,” he told us. “At the moment I am aiming to get to the next two Olympics. After that I suppose I would like to win Badminton, Burghley and Kentucky – all in the same year – so you could say I have a few little ambitions still to complete!”
Home bred Skewbald Park Pilot and Cermont are the ones to watch in his current string but, asked what horse he would choose should he be able to have any in the world and he plumped for Dubai Millennium – unsurprisingly for his power and speed.
He lists his essential items in life as his lorry, soft leather chaps, pints of Guinness and, naturally enough, horses. Matthew hates Sunday drivers getting in his way on the motorways as he tends to be a fast driver, which probably accounts for his love of speed. In fact, if he wasn’t eventing, he probably would have ended up as a National Hunt jockey or Formula 1 driver!
As one of the newest members of the Baileys team we are looking forward to working with Matthew and seeing a few, if not all, of his dreams come true!
